Best Online Courses to Learn a Money-Making Skill (2026)

Beginner-friendly programs in data, project management, UX, marketing and IT, plus where creative skills fit in.

There are two kinds of online courses: the ones that teach you a skill somebody will pay for, and the ones you buy at 1 a.m. and never open. This guide is about the first kind.

We focused on beginner-level programs that need no degree and no prior experience, list a clear time commitment, and teach tools that show up in real job postings. Prices and program details come from the official course pages as of October 22, 2026.

Straight talk: no course guarantees a job or a raise, and anyone who promises one is selling something. What a good program gives you is structure, practice projects and a certificate you can list. The hours you put in are what turn that into a skill.

How Coursera pricing works (read this first)

Five of our picks are Google Career Certificates hosted on Coursera. You can pay for one program monthly (Coursera lists most individual courses and programs at roughly $49 to $79 a month), or subscribe to Coursera Plus, which is $59 a month and covers 10,000+ courses and most professional certificates. Because these certificates are self-paced, finishing faster costs less. We break down the math in Is Coursera Plus worth it?

The picks

Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate

Coursera subscription

Data analytics is the skill of turning a messy spreadsheet into a decision. This program walks beginners through the whole loop: asking the right question, cleaning data, analyzing it and presenting it. It finishes with a case study you can show employers.

Coursera lists 9 courses and 180+ hours of instruction. Google and Coursera also say 75% of certificate graduates report a positive career outcome (like a new job, promotion or raise) within six months of finishing. That's their self-reported survey figure, not ours, so read the fine print on the course page.

Good fit if you like puzzles and spreadsheets don't scare you.

  • Spreadsheets, SQL, Tableau and Python
  • 9 courses, 180+ hours of instruction
  • No degree or experience required
  • When we checked, enrolling came with 3 months of Google AI Pro (terms apply)

Google Project Management Professional Certificate

Every business has projects, and somebody has to keep them from catching fire. This 7-course series covers the basics of planning, budgeting, managing risk and communicating with a team, plus Agile project management with Scrum events, artifacts and roles.

Good fit if you're the friend who organizes the group trip and actually makes the spreadsheet.

  • 7-course series
  • Agile and Scrum foundations
  • About 6 months at 10 hours a week
  • No degree or experience required

Google UX Design Professional Certificate

Coursera subscription

UX (user experience) design is about making apps and websites less annoying. You'll design on paper and in Figma, and the program says you'll finish with a portfolio of three end-to-end projects. For design jobs, the portfolio matters as much as the certificate, so this structure is a real plus.

Good fit if bad websites physically upset you. (We relate.)

  • 8-course series
  • Figma and a 3-project portfolio
  • About 6 months at 10 hours a week

Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Professional Certificate

Coursera subscription

This one is especially handy if you want to market your own small business or side hustle. The program lists tools like Canva, Constant Contact, Google Ads, Google Analytics, Hootsuite, HubSpot, Mailchimp and Shopify, and you build portfolio pieces like customer personas and social media calendars.

Good fit if you sell anything online, or want to.

  • 8-course series
  • Google Ads, Google Analytics, Shopify and more
  • About 6 months at 10 hours a week

Google IT Support Professional Certificate

Coursera subscription

The shortest program on our list. It covers troubleshooting, customer support, networking, operating systems including Linux, the command line and security basics. Coursera says it's designed to take beginners to job readiness in about three to six months.

Good fit if you're already the family's unpaid help desk.

  • 6-course series
  • About 3 months at 10 hours a week
  • Linux, DNS, command line, security basics

For creative and freelance skills

Not every money-making skill comes with a certificate. Illustration, video editing, photography and design are often sold through a portfolio and word of mouth. For those, project-based classes can be a better value:

How to get your money's worth

  1. Pick one program, not five. Subscriptions reward focus. Finishing one certificate beats starting four.
  2. Block the hours on your calendar. "About 10 hours a week" is roughly an hour and a half a day. Decide which hour and a half.
  3. Build in public. Post your projects to a portfolio or LinkedIn as you go. The work is what gets noticed.
  4. Watch the trial dates. Free trials turn into charges. Set a reminder the day you sign up.
